This resort is also renowned for its great athletes, such as the two Confortola, Tino Pietrogiovanna, Silvano Barco, Pietro Vitalini and Deborah Compagnoni. Here you will find ski lifts going up to 2700 m of altitude on Monte Sobretta, where the snow is granted from the end of November until May, may it be natural or provided by a snowmaking system (90% of the alpine skiing slopes and part of the cross-country trails are covered by a snowmaking system). The resort offers 35Km of slopes for alpine skiing with different difficulty levels, and 15Km of runs for cross-country skiing, with an agonistic trail and a tourist trail. An eight-place gondola lift connects S. Caterina Valfurva with Valle dell’Alpe, where you will find the international slope where the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2005 took place; this is the “Deborah Compagnoni” slope, the most known in the whole ski area, provided with a modern lightening system for nocturne skiing. The ski area of Ortles-Cevedale group, which Santa Caterina Valfurva is a part of, undoubtedly is the widest in Europe, and offers countless routes for ski-mountaineering. After skiing, you can’t miss a relaxing visit to Bormio thermal baths. Moreover, here you can enjoy the Valtellina cooking specialities: pizzoccheri, bresaola, polenta taragna, sciatt, and, of course, its renowned wines.
