CAR-FREE SKI RESORTS – SKI HOLIDAYS WITHOUT SMOG

There are some car-free ski resorts where smog and noise are only distant memories. Some ski resorts decided to distinguish themselves offering a ski holiday without cars. There are no paved roads, but only paths and tracks for skiers, horses, sleighs or at most some electric cabs. They are not so many to tell the truth, but they have found a niche of skiers who are happy to leave their car, almost during the holidays. Not so common in Italy, in Switzerland you will find many car-free ski resorts.

Alpe di Siusi (South Tyrol)

The way going to Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm is closed to private traffic from 9 a.m. to 5 p. m. It can be reached using the Seiser Alm gondola lift or taking the bus which connects directly Seiser to Seiser Alm. If you spent your night on Seiser Alm, you can have a special pass to reach and leave your accommodation by car; while you are here, you are allowed – before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m. – to ride the way to Compaccio, on the west side of Seiser Alm. There, you will find the ski lift over Seiser-Seiser Alm gondola lift and a big pay and display parking area. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. private traffic is forbidden in Seiser Alm.

Moso in Passiria (South Tyrol)

Moso inPassiria, near the Pfelders ski ski area, is a limited traffic area. From the gates of the village, in Plan helm, only locals and hosts in the hotel of the village can ride inside Plan. The traffic is regulated by a barrier at the village gates. After this barrier, the quietness: a two-wheels train and two city bus offer in winter a service from the parking area to the platter lift.

Chamois (Aosta Valley)

It is a little, quiet resort in Valtournenche. The cable car starting from Buisson, helm of Antey-St-André, connects this resort to the bottom of the valley, where you can leave your car and go up to this little village, one of the few in Italy not reachable by car. Chamois has also an heliport in the Suis helm, which hosts little airplanes.

Alpe di Mera (Piedmont)

From Scopello village you can go up with the chairlift to Alpe di Mera, where in winter there are no cars. Everything can be reached skis on: from bars to restaurants, to shops, to hotels; here you will find calm and relax, and a wonderful view on Monte Rosa.
