San Domenico

San Domenico is a quiet ski resort in the heart of Piedmont Lepontine Alps; it lies on a plateau among the mountains that delimit the Val Cairasca, in Val Ossola. Here, you can ski between 1420 m, where the village is located, to Dosso, at 2550 m, on 25 Km of alpine skiing slopes. The position of these slopes, the favourable exposure and the frequency of snowfalls result in an excellent natural snow, which allows to ski from December to May. In the sunny Alpe Ciamporino basin, you will find the easy, large slopes. In Passo Sella and in Dosso, experts can enjoy themselves on slopes approved for international downhill and Super G competitions. From Alpe Ciamporino, a new red slope goes down in the woods to the valley and the starting point of the chairlift; it is called “Casa Rossa” and is suitable for night skiing. In a delimited area, at the foot of “Salariolis’” Massif, lies the Sando snow park, with various facilities (+39 339 8294144). San Domenico also offers wide areas reserved to off-piste skiing, that you can safely try, from Dosso to the centre of San Domenico. Using snowshoes you can walk on snowy paths going up to Alpe Ciamporino, or going down to Ponte Campo basin, a valley crossed by the Cairasca creek at the foot of Monte Leone (3,552 m). In Trasquera, a few kilometres away from the resort, Nordic skiing lovers will find Centro del Fondo La Sotta, with its cross-country skiing trail, winding for 6.5 Km in the conifer woods. Val Cairasca is a picturesque valley; the Cairasca creek flows across the whole valley bottom, and it is originated by six different flows starting from six different glaciers!
