Passo dello Stelvio
The Stelvio Pass is near the border with the Swiss Canton of Graubünden. The Stelvio Pass is near the border with the Swiss Canton of Graubünden. The road crossing it connects Bormio and Valtellina with Trafoi and Val Venosta, linking the Lombardy with Switzerland and Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol. In Stelvio Pass, there is one of the few ski resorts suitable for summer skiing. Actually, we should say “only” for summer skiing, since from November to May it is impossible to reach the starting point of the chairlift taking to the slopes from 2758m, where the pass is. This has partly penalized the development of this resort. Nevertheless, we must remember that almost all the slopes are on the glacier, making very difficult to build new ski lifts. As it often happens, the slopes are easy or medium-level. The glacier is also a reason why the most ski lifts are platter lifts, and there are only a pair of cable cars, one of them recently rebuilt. However, Stelvio Pass is a good training for those who want to learn to ski or to improve their technique. The ski school Pirovano is well known, and someone calls it “the ski university”. We strongly recommend to pay a visit in the end of the Spring or at the beginning of the Autumn, in order to enjoy the best snow.
