Macugnaga

At the foot of the majestic Monte Rosa Massif, you will find Macugnaga ski resort, in the province of Verbano Cusio Ossola. There are two big skiing areas: Belvedere and Monte Moro. From Precetto village, at 1390 m, the homonymous chairlift takes you to the Alpe Burki slopes (at 1650 m), where a platter lift serves 3 blue slopes for a total of 4.3 Km. Another chairlift takes to Belvedere, at the beginning of the homonymous glacier, at 1932 m, where you will find three slopes for 5.8 Km of total length. Kids can enjoy their first ski experiences, too, thanks to two magic carpets in Precetto, at the starting and arriving point of the chairlift. From Staffa, at 1327 m, the skiers can take the cable car to Alpe Bill, at 1711 m. From there, a second cable car takes to Monte Moro ski area, where you will find seven slopes of different levels. A chairlift, two platter lifts and a moving sidewalk go up to 2900 m. We recommend two wonderful alpine skiing red slopes (Moro slope, 6.5 Km, and Meccia slope, 4 Km), going from Moro Pass to Alpe Bill. You can enjoy your snowboard on the slopes or off-piste going from Monte Moro slopes until Alpe Bill, or in the larch wood in Belvedere area, just below Monte Rosa. Monte Moro hosts an area reserved for free-stylers. Nordic skiing lovers will find in Macugnaga  cross-country skiing trails, which cross the areas near the villages of Pecetto and Isella, from where you can reach the neighbouring Val Quarazza. During winter, mountain guides (+39 393 8169380 www.guidealpinemacugnaga.it) organize excursions for ski-mountaineering lovers, to discover the wonderful views in Valle Anzasca and in the skiing area of the east side of Monte Rosa, or accompany free riders in the downhills from the spots reachable in heliski, or even organize ice climbing courses. There are many opportunities beside skiing: excursions in snowshoes, even at night, ice skating (0324 65002), snowmobile riding, swimming in the town swimming pool called Stadium (347 1076691), and paragliding, that you can enjoy the whole year.
